Interesting outlook: Top 5 Industries Hiring Now (Yahoo!)

Since I'm still in the long term career hunting phase (even though I am working in the field), I found this article to be of interest. Yahoo listed five fields hiring now across the United States.

Topping them all off is accounting, which makes the least amount of money but shows the greatest growth, at 31% over the past few months and expected to rise at least 22% between 2008 and 2018. I expected the average salary to be higher than the $68,000 given, because it is a competitive field, but also I always think that there's too many out there right now (every school which has red-blooded students graduates hundreds of them every year)

My personal favorite? My field of course, environmental consulting firms at #3. Interestingly, they're making well over $79,000 on average, which is encouraging, considering that I only graduated from Penn State with 6 people in my field. Given the booms in climate change policy and natural gas drilling and energy crises, I can only think of how fortunate I am to be experienced in the field and aiming for it (I have already received 11 interviews from the state - so they need environmentally conscious people).

Engineering doesn't surprise me, but the biggest one that stunned me was the retail sector, of which supervisory roles were right behind the engineering and consulting industries. Wrapping up the 5 spot, perhaps the biggest strain of them all (but big money in times like these), financial consulting.

Sus idiomas, por favor. (Your thoughts, please.)

I was at a group therapy session today (maybe not even group, but more therapy), and we talked about a place where I can get experience and such and can tailor my work to what I like to do. If I don't like sitting at a desk all day and answering phones, I don't have to do that.

I can't do anything that you listed, and I think I'd be fired first day. Management in retail? That's all I see in the retail field these days.

I think you'd make a good auto mechanic, Mandy. It sounds like you like being alone more than anything, and that you like to solve problems yourself. That and you always talk about racing down at Stafford Speedway. There are plenty of jobs available, don't get me wrong. But the best ones to enter, especially the ones which make the most money, are on that list. The sad thing is that there's a reason why they are paid so high, and that is that very few people want to do them. Take what I do for example, environmental scientist/meteorologist. A lot of what I do at work is enforcing laws and making sure pollutants are within Commonwealth and Federal guidelines. I have to climb ladders, take measurements, deal with obnoxious industrial administrators, and work out in the pouring rain. 90% of people in the United States wouldn't last 2 weeks doing that. And very few have the analytical background, too. Everyone can add 2+2, multiply and graph. But the way you handle an atmospheric problem changes EVERY TIME. And very few people are willing to challenge themselves to do that - let's face it, our country is great, but we like to outsource if it means we have to get our hands dirty.

I can tell you that it is not that terrible to get started, but typically, you have to be VERY ambitious and cutthroat to succeed in retail. I can't tell you how many times I wondered where my boss' brains were....it definitely humbles to see what not having a college education or organizational skills will bring you. I always say that you shouldn't get a job that pays a salary unless you work for at least 3-6 months in retail. You can take crap from anyone once you do that. Mentally, it prepares you for all of the Mickey Mouse U-educated, snobby, yuppie superstar celebrity bosses you get. And you will keep the $50,000+ jobs you get in a few years IMO.

My mom actually thinks that I'd be great as a reporter - and that I'd be better than some of the guys who do the broadcasting.

And it's not that I don't want to get my hands dirty. It's just that I'd be so confused. Not sure if any crews would want to take me under their wing if I don't know what I'm doing. I'm sure I could learn then and there...

I was surprised to see retail in there...that's my day job, and we get a bad rap because of a certain low-wage company, but if you know where to go, the jobs and the money are there. I'm a department head, and get a guaranteed 38-40 hours a week, full benefits, and bonuses. I sell, merchandise (show) product, and meet with vendors. They sought me out...I didn't have to ask. There's another person who does my job in a part time capacity as well, and since the two of us have been down there, our sales-to-goal percentage has increased 22%. I'm hoping that this job will get me into management within a year or so, because that's where the real money is at.
