    GSN Advertisements and Upcoming Programs

Have you noticed that the only commercials GSN is currently airing with regards to their programming are commercials promoting The Newlywed Game, Baggage and Lingo?

With all of the different shows on the network, surely we can devote some time to promoting them as well, instead of repeating 1 of the same 3 promos every commercial break? Personally, I hit the MUTE button on my remote the moment I hear the announcer's voice in the commercial saying, "They're handsome..." (reference to Baggage) or "Let's Play the Newlywed Game..." (and to counter that, I always say out loud, "Let's Not Play the Newlywed Game" when that commercial airs).

Now, that being said, do you guys think we're going to hear anything anytime soon regarding new GSN programs being in production, or renewals of current GSN programs?

I don't remember when we first heard of 1 VS 100 being in production last year, but it premiered in November 2010, if I recall correctly. I wonder if October or November will be the month we hear of some news on upcoming shows and/or renewals.

Given how poorly their last several programming ventures fared, they may not want to focus on "originals" right now. Their money would be better spent balancing out the schedule (reacquiring the rights for the G-T library, instead of the inane 400 ep leases, for one), and acquiring quality recent programming (getting Harvey Feud, and cutting back on Karn). And I'm as sick of the repetitious commercials as you are...if I'm watching anything that I've DVRed, I immediately fast forward through it. If I'm watching in real time, I will intentionally pause it and go do something else for *just long enough* so that I can come back and flip right past all those stupid promos.

Given GSN's original programming being major flops, I am hoping that the "new kid on the block" that replaces the not-so-good Kelly Goode does the right thing and brings back classics. After all, based on what I read somewhere, it's cheaper to acquire classics or modern game shows than it is to produce shows. And besides, many of the classics had been off the air for how long? 2 1/2 years or something?

That said, I support GSN giving us back the classic shows that many viewers enjoy greatly. But then again, the "new kid on the block" may have better ideas.

Let's be fair... aside from Karn/O'Hurley, none of their non-original shows are setting the world on fire, either. And I don't see any new shows they could acquire that would have that affect. Okay, Harvey Feud would do well, but you can only air so much Feud. Some other classics could potentially shake up early daytime, but there's no way they'd get used after 2 PM. Recent Wheel of Fortune episodes could also help the early hours, but would be off-limits later in the day. Donny's Pyramid has performed well in the past, and might still be good for an afternoon or late-night slot, but we've seen lately that trotting out old warhorses doesn't always pay off. And while Minute To Win It could possibly get some decent numbers, it certainly wouldn't be anywhere near as big as Millionaire and DoND were when GSN first started airing them.

So really, what GSN needs are some hot new originals that can create buzz for the network. They should go back and take a look at what made shows like Woolery's Lingo, Whammy!, Chain Reaction, Catch 21, and even The Newlywed Game successful. These all engaged viewers with their gameplay, and didn't need to rely on big money, gimmicks, or big-name celebrity hosts. (Before anyone asks, Carnie Wilson and Alfonso Ribiero aren't very big names, and Chuck Woolery was/is primarily known for [gasp!] hosting game shows.) I get the feeling that shows like Engvall Lingo and Inaba 1 vs. 100 are in limbo because their ratings don't justify the expense, even if they are getting above-average numbers by the "bear standard".

GSN's next batch of originals should focus on gameplay that engages the target audience, with hosts that are hired for their hosting abilities rather than their recognizability, and modest budgets. They could look into formats they've had success with in the past, either as original versions (Chain Reaction, Whammy!/Press Your Luck) or in reruns of classic versions (Card Sharks, Blockbusters). But nothing that is known for having a big budget by today's standards (such as DoND). Some popular international formats may also be worth looking into.

I can really care less about the promos, I just sort of tune them out. Oftentimes I'm on the computer or something anyway, so I really don't care if they replay the same commercial over and over. It would be a smart move for GSN to promote some other shows, particularly anything in primetime, recent schedule changes (Like Whammy back in afternoons), and some classics. No reason not to promote 11AM Match Game hour or something.

That would do good in ratings, but they'd be in the same demographic hole they were before. That wouldn't be good now would it.

You have to try new ideas to see what people like. OK, some of them have failed, but if they keep trying new other things, they can find a new hit just like Baggage was last year.

They haven't promoted any older show since February 2009, I wouldn't count on any older show promotion anytime soon. I wouldn't mind seeing them, but it ain't happening.

They should promote their daytime shows, primetime shows and nighttime shows in 3 seperate promos, In my opinion. That might be worth a shot.

Speaking of promotion...I couldn't help but notice that the bug in the corner not only kind of blocks the frame (though it's more transparent than some of the previous ones), but as I'm watching Eubanks, I also noticed that it says "You're Watching Cards Sharks."

    Can you say spellcheck FAIL?

Someone mentioned that on here yesterday for the 10AM ET Card Sharks. How do they manage to make spelling errors, especially on that? And it was the same way this morning.

Aside from the obvious typo, I noticed the new wording next to the GSN logo as well. Is GSN trying to copy CBS by saying "You're Watching [Insert Show Name Here]" during all of their programs? Isn't that what a TV Programming Guide is for? And really, do we need to be told that the name of the show we're watching is [Insert Show Name Here] when we already know what show we're watching in the first place? Sigh.

I thought that too. We're all watching on either satellite or cable, isn't it easy enough to just push the guide button, instead of plastering a huge bug on the screen? It makes the swinging Whammy bug from a few years ago seem almost tolerable.

I sent GSN an e-mail about it weeks ago, asking them to remove it since it's really irritating - almost as irritating as showing advertisements during the ending credits instead of playing the credit music for the game show. They told me they forwarded my e-mail off to their programming department. That was the last I heard from them on it.

Alls they can do is pass the comments on to these departments, apparently. They can't tell us what they say about it.

GSN is probably not going to do anything about the way they supply advertisements during the show. Imagine if Super Password or Body Language was airing, and an advertising banner blocks the word or phrase that the home viewer wants to see before the word is identified by the contestant/celebrity, and the banner blocks it. This is probably what may have factored into Body Language's ultimate fate on GSN, and was off the schedule since the fall of 2008. Super Password and Password Plus may have suffered that same fate as well, but I guess we will never know.

The only advertisements that GSN is airing are Newlywed Game, Baggage, and Lingo, because they are original shows that are doing fairly well. GSN hasn't aired a brand new original since the Lingo revival debuted, which was nearly 5 months ago. Maybe GSN is taking a break from producing new originals until Kelly Goode's successor takes over. Maybe the successor has some good ideas for possible revivals - revival of classic format Card Sharks, anyone?

That already did/does happen and it's a very serious stretch to suggest that it impacts a show's fate on a schedule. It's annoying but it doesn't even happen that much.
