We oppose SOPA because it will not end online piracy nor anything you can find on the internet.

We oppose SOPA because literally, hundreds of thousands of independent and struggling music and film artists will never be able to distribute their music to fans who want to hear or see it.

We oppose SOPA because prisons aren't for people who violate copyright law, and sending someone to prison for 5 years for a copyrighted song is lunacy.

We oppose SOPA because companies like the RIAA and the MPAA should not be the world's police.

We oppose SOPA because DNS blocking is not that hard to override if you do it right. Firefox already has an add on to defeat it.

We oppose SOPA because a group of sixty and seventy-somethings who have probably never even seen a web page are mandating global laws.

We oppose SOPA because the internet is responsible for over $2 trillion of economic growth every year, and there's no way the U.S. Economy can take that kind of hit.

We oppose SOPA because music and movie pirates in most cases buy the stuff they were pirating.

We oppose SOPA because popular sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and others will be liable for things their people post and that can lead to shutting down of those sites.

We oppose SOPA because the internet is the biggest single technological advance the globe has had in the last two decades and does not belong to the RIAA or the MPAA.

But most importantly, We oppose SOPA because the United States is not like Iran. Whatever happened to "The land of the free"? Installing the same kind of censorship that cripples people in Iran and China will not deter piracy, rather it will merely leave their citizens misinformed.

We oppose SOPA... and everyone in the world should.

You make it out to seem like I don't oppose them. I do. I'm just saying people are forgetting that this isn't the first time they've attempted to censor the Internet. You act like this is the very time.

I'm not losing any sleep over it, because I know it's gonna fail. You shouldn't lose any sleep over it, either.

http://techland.time.com/2012/01/05/...ne-in-protest/ Facebook, Twitter and a host of other sites are considering a blackout to protest SOPA. Basically, cutting off their service to give a preview of what it would look like if SOPA passed. This should raise people's awareness about the bill's effects. I can't imagine people being happy when Facebook or Twitter is down for a day.

What the hell is wrong with you people? Why on Earth are you ignoring my posts? Are you even remotely aware that this is not the first time the government has tried to censor Internet, and that those attempts have failed? JESUS CHRIST MAN!

I'm just passing along the news. That's all I'm doing.

I know it's going to fail. At least it should. But keep in mind Barack Obama signed the NDAA law and is now allowing American citizens to be detained.

I fear that Congress may try to force it through without thinking.

"Congress ... without thinking" -- a redundancy to say the least.

I just quickly skimmed thru this thread and I heard ya, over and over. I mean no offense but honestly I think you're naive to not be concerned. Obviously there's some pretty determined people behind SOPA or this subject wouldn't keep reoccurring. And if you want to take a lesson from the past look at the Home Land Security Act. Many of our basic human freedoms were stealthily taken away or jeopardized with this act. I'm not necessarily putting SOPA on the same level(although it does have the same potential) my point is when there's a will, there's a way.
In my opinion, if anything's to be learned by the numerous failed attempts to pass SOPA, its that "action" rather than complacency has held them a bay. Thus logically taking "action" should be the prescribed course of the opposition. Otherwise we have no one to blame but ourselves.

I don't know how CaseyAbell can be so sure that SOPA won't pass.

I'm not absolutely sure. Nobody can be absolutely sure. But somehow I doubt the Republican House is in any hurry to do Big Media a favor.

That's where lobbying and money comes in.

Instead of typing a tedious rant on here, I posted on YouTube for all to see. Link here. See that ad down there? Yes folks, I make money in media too - as a director and copyright holder. Only I don't have millions to get laws passed from my favorite Congressman. Ugh. (The one thing I thought was "Yes, we can go back to where the only media was TV and radio so they can control all the outlets and preserve an outdated business model by making it illegal to change our monopoly.")

Republican Paul Ryan is coming out against SOPA. http://thehill.com/blogs/hillicon-va...ps-piracy-bill. And there will be a hearing on the 18th featuring some of the internet's biggest opposers of the bill. http://thehill.com/blogs/hillicon-va...ing-for-jan-18
