    80s Fads You Absolutely Hated

After seeing yesterday's TPIR Showcase, I decided to create this thread devoted to 1980s fads.

Here are 2 of my 1980s rejects:

Jelly Shoes - Lots of young girls wore them in the mid-1980s (primarily 1985). They're so ugly. I don't know why a lot of girls wore them then, but thankfully that fad was short-lived. I'm glad I didn't have to wear them. Where were flip-flops when you needed them most?

Acid-Wash Jeans - Oh, they're so awful. They were popularly worn in 1987, and many singers, such as Samantha Fox, and maybe some members of Bon Jovi, were seen wearing such awkward jeans. I prefer solid colors more than anything else.

What are/were your most hated 1980s fads?

Acid Wash jeans were the bomb. I used to wear those all the time. Stone washed jeans too.

But LEG WARMERS? WHAT THE (F-BOMB)? And you know when I go to the gym, you can tell the label was made in the '80s because they show the girls working out with the leg warmers.

Upcoming Shows: Iron Maiden, Devore, September 13
    Kamelot, Anaheim, September 21

Ah, yes... leg warmers. They were not that great a fad. It's like adding color to your legs. And besides, what's the point of leg warmers? You can wear track pants to keep your legs warm no problem. Thankfully, leg warmers were likely not as popular by the time 1988 rolled around.

I do have to admit, even though I hated the 1990s, fads and fashion wise, I'd definitely take the 1990s and even 2000s more than the 1980s.

The only thing good about the 1980s, I admit, was lots of upbeat music, clean rap, Bob Eubanks' Card Sharks, Press Your Luck, The Smurfs (all seasons except for Season 9), and, despite low ratings, the short-lived animated Little Rascals cartoon series that aired on ABC (it's sad that it's still not airing on Boomerang to this day). Count me in for Super Password as well.

I wasn't a big fan of any dress style before about 1995. A lot of it looks like they shopped at the secondhand store (and the problem is, from my experience, a lot of the clothing ended up there.) I was a bigger fan of the style of the mid-to-late 90s up until 2005 or so, when the 80s style clothing came back into vogue. I'm sorry, but you shouldn't wear leather pants so tight we can tell what religion you follow, nor torn jeans or black boots. Leave those to the kids who cut their wrists and threaten teachers all day. Nor do I like the female style today of loose clothing and tunics and leggings, which were back in the 80s.

Leg warmers can be defeated by actually preparing to exercise. There's a reason guys don't wear 'em, and it's not for fashion. Blame it on the fact that leg muscles are like engines...the bigger they are, the quicker they warm up.

I remember Lee Press-On Nails greatly. They used to be a regular during the fee plugs on many game shows in 1986.

Better to let fingernails grow naturally instead of pressing them on.

mostly in the game show world it was better know as a "lovely parting gift"!

along with rice-a-roni, a copy of the home game, and a years supply of turtle wax. (LOL!)

Spiral perms and mall bangs (I had both lol...)
    Gold pinkie fingernails
    Peroxide bleach jobs
    Tube skirts
    Linebacker shoulder pads
    Miami Vice look on guys
    Flock Of Seagulls/Thompson Twins hair
    Bright colored Reebok high tops
    Huge earrings (those things HURT!!!)
Acid washed jeans (especially with the ankle zippers)
    Spatter patterned anything
    Neon

And sadly, I did all of the above. It's nice to see trends come and go...we all thought we looked so awesome back then, too. Hindsight is 20/20 for sure LOL!!!

Wearing 50 to 100 of those thin plastic bracelets was "rad" in the 80's! They were black, white, and even in bright, fluorescent colors. And wearing a sweatshirt and/or a blouse that had the neckline expanded (or just cut-out) so that it would just fall to either side, and leave one shoulder exposed.

Neon was cool! I used to own a neon yellow pair of shorts.

But I don't remember if anyone remembers this but there was a brand of cheese out called "Lite-Line". Lite-line was the first attempt at making a diet cheese, and that stuff was some of the worst tasting and most hideous cheese on the market. You could put that thing in an oven at 500 degrees and the damn thing would not melt no matter how long you kept it in the oven. I'm convinced that stuff could survive re-entry from the Space Shuttle.

I wouldn't be surprised if we ever learned that "Lite-Line" diet cheese was the secret additive in 'glow-in-the-dark' plastics of today!
