MTV revives Hollywood Squares; gives it a different name.

Since the last version seen in 2004, we've been without a show like Hollywood Squares for eight years now. Now, MTV plans to revive Hollywood Squares, but now call it "Hip-Hop Squares".

And checking the comment section, I see it took all of two posts for someone to bust out the comparisons to In Living Color's infamous "East Hollywood Squares" sketch.

I say, if you can have Rock & Roll Jeopardy!, or even Top Card (which was really little more than a modified Gambit with a country music theme) why not this as well? Could be fun. And I was mildly surprised to realize, in reading this, that it's been almost eight years since the Bergeron Squares closed up shop; I had no idea it'd been that long already. I guess time really does fly when you get older. (By comparison, there was only a five-year gap between the last episode of the Marshall version and the debut of John Davidson's [1], and nine years between the end of Davidson's and the start of Bergeron's.)

[1] I consider The Match Game - Hollywood Squares Hour as its own entity, and don't count it as a true "revival" of either series as such.

I also thought of the "East Hollywood Squares" sketches when I first read about this. But I think it actually has potential. Someone on the Invision board questioned why Coolio isn't listed, but at this point he's not really relevant to hip-hop, and is the type of celebrity you'd expect to see on VH1 rather than MTV2. He would be a good player though, along with Snoop Dogg who recently appeared on TPiR. Of course, I'm also not sure how Bam Margera can be considered a hip-hop star. But nonetheless, I'm actually pretty intrigued by this.

    Hollywood Squares+Hip Hop Stars=Gimmick

i mean will all the questions for the rap stars be all about hip hop or will it be mixed?

so we got a Musical themed version of Hollywood Squares coming in may on MTV2
i won't be suprised if their is a musical themed version of Match Game
    coming in the near future.

also would the "Key" bonus round from the 2002-2004 H2 era will be resurrected for the
    MTV2 spin-off as well?

and did you know that their was a mobile phone game called Hollywood Squares: Hip Hop Edtion
that was realesed by a company called Sonic Branding Solutions in 2006?

From the blog with a photo of host Peter Rosenberg...

    Hip hopping through the squares

We've seen revivals of Figure It Out and (maybe) Name That Tune and (maybe) 100K Pyramid. Now MTV2 gets into the act with a hip hop version of Hollywood Squares, called (you guessed it) Hip Hop Squares. The press release is short on gameplay details, so I have no clue how close the new version will stick to the classic rules.

About all the release says is that the show will be more party than game show, which sounds vaguely depressing. New York radio guy Peter Rosenberg hosts. The release runs off a long list of celebs who will occupy the squares. Some of them are even hip hop artists. Then there's a football player and some guy from Jack@ss and the hip hop god knows who else. I don't think Whoopi Goldberg is anywhere to be found, though.

Have to fess up that I've never been a huge Squares fan, in any version. Too much scripting for my, er, unscripted tastes. I assume that the celebs on this new version will also be given their lines, if we'll really gonna "party." Otherwise, they just might natter on forever and ruin the whole party atmosphere. The show debuts May 22.

Well...this is really happening if they already have a premiere date and casting call.

Entertainment Tonight says ten episodes are happening, with another ten to follow.

which of course if my math is correct makes it twenty episodes.

who will be the "Center Square" for this "Spin-Off" of the "Squares" franchise?

the reason i said "Spin-Off" is because this series is not a true "Revival" of "Hollywood Squares" just like "Rock & Roll Jeopardy!" is not a true "revival" of "Jeopardy!" even though the Alex Trebek version of the program has never been cancelled since 1984, so all in all "Hip Hop Squares" is not a true revival of "Hollywood Squares" it is just a "Spin-Off" that's all.

also will the "Center Square" be a Paul Lynde/Joan Rivers/Whoopi Goldberg/Martin Mull ('03-'04) Permanent style or will it be like the H2 era('02-'03) were their will be one celebrity in the "Center Square" for a week and then the next one and so on and so fourth(a.k.a Rotating Center Square).

also will their be a "Secret Square" round in the main game and if their is will the contestant play for a trip or cash?

and i assume those ten episodes means that the show could be on one week each week, possibly Tuesday nights, right (just saying)?

BTW, i know that HS is owned by CBS but does that also means it is also owned by Sony Pictures Televersion as well or is it just CBS in general?

and will this version still holds "the five square win" rules as well?

As I do not have MTV2 on my cable system, this show means nothing to me.

Yeah, THIS show has a lot of potential...

"Fiddy, did you smack your beyotch today?"

    "I agree"

    "Circle Gets The Square".

You know, it's disheartening that I'd actually want Bergeron or Davidson squares vs. this show which sounds like a gargantual pile of (s-bomb).

Upcoming Shows: Iron Maiden, Devore, September 13
    Kamelot, Anaheim, September 21
