    A case for American Bandstand.

Bandstand left the air for good in 1989. A victim of falling ratings and the MTV age. It came back on Vh1 in half-hour edited reruns for a brief period in the 90's. in 2004, Dick Clark announced plans to revive the show for a new generation, most likely with Ryan Seacrest as host. This didn't happen because of Dick's stroke. But distributors were interested in bringing Bandstand back to Television. Today, we don't see reruns nor have any news of a possible revival. Dick Clark Productions is just sitting on the brand. 2012 marks the 60th anniversary of American Bandstand. We live in the era of the remake, the reboot, and the revival. Why Bandstand isn't being considered is beyond me. MTV doesn't do music anymore, Soul Train's gone, I think this would be a great time to bring back American Bandstand. But what do I know? What do you think is more likely to happen with the brand in the coming years? Reruns, or a reboot? DCP even set up a Twitter account and a Facebook account for American Bandstand.

Hey AdamStabelli1, i choose reruns, mainly for the reason that American Bandstand may not workout to well in the 2010's. But who knows, i guess stranger things have happen LOL... btw welcome to GSN Adam

I would love to see reruns. I missed the good days of VH-1 when they'd air a show like Bandstand on their schedule. Based on watching clips on YouTube, it seems like a really fun show. Reruns of Soul Train do very well on Centric and Bounce. It'd be nice if some station somewhere would follow suit and find a good channel for Bandstand reruns.

I totally agree matchgame74fan, but i probably missed it when VH-1 had reruns of American Bandstand. And where i live they have a channel called AntennaTv (basically they only air classic tv shows, 1950's thru the 1990's) ... so maybe they'd pick up American Bandstand *fingers crossed*

Well, Soul Train's not totally gone. There will be a thing called the Soul Train Cruise which is starting next year. This is what I mean by using a brand. Soul Train might not be on the air, but the brand is still active. Dick Clark Productions needs to do the same with Bandstand.

American Bandstand would not fly in the 2010's and beyond in first-run - unless someone like Ryan Seacrest served as host, possibly. After all, Ryan Seacrest took over the duties of a legendary host of American Top 40 in 2004, so why not Dick Clark's replacement on American Bandstand? What Casey Kasem and Dick Clark is to older generations (including I), Ryan Seacrest is to the younger generation.

I agree that American Bandstand would do well in reruns. And full original broadcasts (with maybe some credit crunches and slight editing, even limited to just 1970s and 1980s episodes) on top of that. After all, Premiere Radio Network does air full episodes of 1970s and 1980s episodes of American Top 40, so why not Dick Clark Productions with American Bandstand? It would bring back nostalgia for those who grew up with the show, viewers who were in junior high back in the day who tuned into Dick Clark's program every Saturday afternoon after the cartoons were done for the week.

Dick Clark can still be seen on GSN on reruns of The $25,000 Pyramid, but believe me, it won't be long before it's gone. I'd say, eventually, Dick Clark will be gone from TV for good - unless whoever takes over DCP before or after Mr. Clark passes away allows networks the opportunity to air rebroadcasts of American Bandstand.

However, I will miss Soul Train greatly.

Where's the neither option. That seems more likely

Do you think that DCP would try to reboot the show? Dick's been trying to get it back on the air since the 90's.

With reruns comes the task of paying to air the songs, plus pay the artists who performed. This is part of the reason why VH1 cut the episodes down to 30 minutes. That being said, while it's not very likely, it would make a lot of sense to keep Dick Clark's memory alive by airing the show that most people associate him with. You never know exactly what will happen in the world of television. I'm very fortunate to have saved all of the episodes that I recorded off of VH1 back in the 90s, and "AwardsShowNetwork" just uploaded a bunch of "American Bandstand" clips on YouTube in tribute to Dick. His legacy will live on. As I was saying to my wife earlier this evening, it's never a good thing when somebody dies, and celebrities are very well remembered when they do pass. Dick Clark was a very special case, though. There are very few people who aren't aware of him and what he accomplished in the world of music, television and film, which merits the idea of reairing his fine work.

I hope we do get to see reruns again. The current owners of Soul Train seem to have found a decent method of leasing when they got those episodes on the air. I'm sure lots of money had to be dealt, but they made something work out, which is a feat considering all the musical numbers and songs they had to license. They managed to clear about 100 episodes of shows to air so far for networks like Centric and Bounce. And all of them are uncut; a few even have the original sponsor plugs. And the reruns do great ratings-wise, especially on Bounce. I'm hoping we get to see more fresh ST (the episodes have almost concluded being cycled for a second time, and more and more stations are picking up Bounce), but all of the reruns that have aired have been very enjoyable. Then I guess if all that did go to fruition, it'd just be a matter of finding a network to carry the Bandstand reruns. If something like this happened I imagine that a channel like VH-1 Classic would be the ones airing them on a regular basis.

It'd be nice if VH-1 could try and dig out some of those rebroadcasts again, at least for a tribute's sake.
