Red face What Went Wrong?( Part 1 of 6)

A few years ago, I did a thread called "When Remakes Go Bad". I want to discuss why certain game shows go wrong (some cases horribly wrong). This will be a six week thread on why certain game shows go wrong. The shows that could have been or should have been better. First one of six: Card Sharks 01.

I have seen many threads that Card Sharks 01 was the worst remake of a game show ever. But why do you think this remake failed so miserably? One thought was the host Pat Bullard. There is that old football saying that when the team goes well the quarterback and the coach gets all the credit, but when the team goes bad, they get the blame. I guess you can say that about the host. I refuse to believe that it was just the host. (Next Week: Tic Tac Dough/The Joker's Wild (the 90's))

Let's start with something very basic...some of us never heard of the new Card Sharks in 2001 until earlier this year.

Card Sharks in 2001 was horrible. It was probably the worst remake of any great game show

They took one of the simplest formats ever known and basically turned it into a poor man's Street Smarts. I think Pat Bullard is better suited as writing and producing sitcoms than being a game show host, but I don't think any good host would have saved it.

IMO the only bright spot was when they had policeman and firefighters playing for a 9/11 charity.

Biggest flaw was the way the cards were handled in the main game. Player A can take control of the game and turn over six cards. Player B comes in and gets one question right at the end, and calls the seventh card correctly to win the game. They should have stuck with both players having five cards to turn over. Feud was doing the same kind of thing at the time. I didn't like the "whichever family has the most points after four questions wins" thing. Team A could get the bank for the first three questions, and Team B could win just the fourth question and the game, even if they only had something like 230 points or something. That never sat well with me.

I read the link about C.S. 2001, and I must say if it was that bad, I'm glad I don't recall it at all -- not the show, not the host, not the network (or syndication channels), not even the time frame of it. It must have been on while my husband and I were on my honeymoon or moving into our current abode.

The host and the card dealer was pretty bad, which is what made the show worse.

Were the episodes of CS01 self contained or did they straddle? CS cannot be self-contained without trashing the basic gameplay (see also Syndi DOND).

If you're comparing it to Syndie DOND, then self contained. But I'm not 100% on this

Card Sharks can be self contained if it's done right. Think of how Classic Concentration was self contained. It can be done that way

The front game on CS78/86 could go a briefly as two questions (don't know if it ever happened that fast, but it could: a contestant could win a question and turn all five cards; then repeat) or as long as eleven questions. There would have to be some good editing or substantial gameplay change to make the show self-contained...unless I'm missing something. Which is certainly possible.
