Red face "What Went Wrong?" (pt 2 of 6) ("The Joker's Wild"/"Tic Tac Dough" (90's))

Here is the second part of "What Went Wrong?". This is where we discuss game shows that could have or should have been better, but they failed. Last week was "Card Sharks 01". This Week it is "The Joker's Wild" and "Tic Tac Dough": the 90's version.

After the successful stints in the 70's and 80's, the fall of 1990 marked the return of two legendary hits. The Joker's Wild and Tic Tac Dough came back to television with new looks and new hosts for the 90's version. Pat Finn was the host of the new look Joker's Wild and Patrick Wayne hosting the new look Tic Tac Dough. These two hosts had some tough shoes to fill. Jack Barry and then eventually Bill Cullen for TJW and Wink Martindale and then Jim Caldwell for TTD. Unfortunately, these two shows only lasted one season. What went wrong with these 90's remakes?

    Next Week # 3: "Blackout"

Just watch half of one episode of each. That should answer the question.

To be fair, these shows were awful but it cant be underscored enough the shows probably werent available in some markets at all and bad timeslots in many of the ones it aired. I want to say the shows aired from 5pm-6pm in my local market which was probably great compared to other places. But even that only lasted a few weeks before one was shipped to 12:30am or something like that, and I think the other followed it soon after. This was in a time when local news was expanding to be an hour or hour and a half long, news magazine shows, and the outlandish talk shows were all the rage. WOF and J were the established game show champs and unless another network were trying to commit ratings suicide the weren't going to run these two directly against those. The shows were awful in their own right and with a weak format no one was interested in it was shredded meat against WOF, J, Maury, Jenny Jones, Riki Lake if she was around, Inside Edition, ET, and Hard Copy.

Tic Tac Dough I've seen, and that was very stupid. The versions that GSN showed from the 70's and 80's were so much better. It's like GSN remaking Wheel of Fortune from what it is now to a cable network version with a top prize of $25,000 only. The Joker's Wild, whatever version it was I've never seen, not even on YouTube. Next week I'm not sure what I'll say to Blackout

Also because it's nothing like the originals. Examples...

The Newlywed Game (Bob Eubanks---Carnie Wilson)
    Love Connection (Chuck Woolery---Bill Engvall)
Card Sharks (Do I even need to say it)

    Lingo?

\Patrick Wayne is notorious for his over-excited "you're right!" and "you win!". Also, the rapping dragon didn't sit too well with me. As mentioned in another thread, gameshowgarbage.com points out all the flaws.

I saw both versions of The Joker's Wild (1990) & Tic Tac Dough (1990) when it reran on the USA Network years ago and from watching them the Joker's Wild '90 the format looked nothing to the original version, even though they tried to have the main game almost similar to the original with the categories it was too little too late and as far as Tic Tac Dough '90, that was pretty bad as well.

I'm sorry. I meant to say "Lingo" on the post above instead of Love Connection. Engvall would be pretty bad hosting a dating show.

I really think GSN should pick up Tattletales again, but another good classic would be Tic Tac Dough, and not so The Joker's Wild. I really wish GSN would pick up leases on those two shows. We got our 100K Pyramid back so I'm happy for now
