GSN viewership averages for April 16-22

TVNewser has posted a full cable network prime time/total day ranker for the week of April 16-22. GSN had previously published some cherry-picked numbers from this week, like that 742K number for 5th Grader.

And, guess what, the prime time/total day averages for the week were very good by recent GSN standards: 314K/246K. In total viewers the network ranked 42nd in prime time, 41st in total day. The weak 25-54 numbers show that GSN skews very, very old. Well, double duh. There are no details on individual shows beyond what GSN published in its press release and what Douglas Pucci put on his blog for April 19.

There are lots of interesting numbers for other networks. Poor old Fuel finished dead last in prime time and total day, behind even woeful Current. (A sarcastic commenter suggests Current should start showing hockey games.) My guilty pleasure Investigation Discovery did very well, up to 19th in total day. You can check your own favorite networks to see how they stacked up against the competition.

Crossposted to the blog with a photo of, what else, a Nielsen people meter.

Current and Fuel don't even deserve the free mention you just gave them.

314K/246K in my opinion is still poor for a network like GSN. Averages of what they used to get were better, and right now something like 350K/250K on an average week would be good. But I would have officially liked to have seen these numbers, but too bad.

By GSN's historical standards 314K/246K ain't bad at all. As recently as 2007 this network averaged about 250K viewers in prime time. People have been spoiled by the network's ratings success in 2009 and 2010 with Deal or No Deal and Baggage.

A "network like GSN" is a small niche network that survives by scrimping on programming costs and appealing to a sliver of the total TV audience. GSN could live quite nicely off 314K/246K every week.

Oh jeeze, lighten up. It's just a little joke.

So was what I said, who needs to do the lightening up?

You commented that I shouldn't even have mentioned Current and Fuel. I was just making a little joke about the networks' abysmal ratings. Besides, who cares about the networks getting mentioned on some Internet board?

You as taking this waaaayyyy too seriously. What I said was a joke. It was in reference to you saying they are bringing up the rear in overall viewer ratings. I was implying their ratings are so bad they didn't deserve the free mention on a message board post. I had originally written more to the post but then decided I was going further in depth than needed so I deleted everything except that one line. I had some something about you should charge them promotion fees for giving them more press than anyone else gives them. It's a shame they are dead last because we know who they are whereas if they were like 5th from last no one would ever hear of them. That sort of thing. I was not attacking your post.

Well, we both just mentioned the two networks a lot more.

If G4 finds their 123K/87K satisfactory, I'll punch something b/c Cops likely won't go anywhere.
Could be better for GSN but you take the good with the bad.

OT: I like Cops. I don't get G4 on DirecTV anymore. It was a pretty trashy network from what I saw mostly.

How does one network get removed or unrated from the list? The article mentions that Bloomberg is unrated by Neilsen.
If Current and Fuel get mentions, heres another stinker of a network that doesn't get listed by Neilsen: MAVTV. What a disaster that network is!
GSN is top 45 material in the 500+ channel universe. That's pretty good especially since they rank ahead of ESPN2.

It could be for something similar to the same reason Motown either didn't have a gold or platinum album or single for many, many years. It's not that they didn't meet that criteria many times over, it's just they'd never let the RIAA audit their books to see. Perhaps Bloomberg doesn't want Neilson determining their ratings for one reason or another.

Those two shows alone didn't push the network up to 500K ratings all the time. I think during April we have been seeing unusually high ratings with 5th Grader and Harvey Feud. I just think block scheduling should be shortened another hour, or just go. Because Monday, Tuesdays and Fridays are just pushing GSN's numbers down. But right now there's not too much that can be done about daytime.
