Bob Stewart has passed away at 91

Randy West posted on The Game Show Forum that Game Show creator Bob Stewart has died at the age of 91. Bob of course was responsible for creating shows for Mark Goodson like To Tell The Truth, Password, and The Price is Right. He then went on his own to create and produce Pyramid.

Sad day in the Game Show world, that is for sure.

Wow. Two deaths related to Pyramid. First, Dick Clark, and now Bob Stewart. 2012 is definitely a sad year for Pyramid fans indeed.

And I wonder if Drew Carey will acknowledge Bob Stewart's death on a future TPIR episode, seeing he created TPIR?

Maybe. But then the only part that remains which he created is the One Bid (IUFB).

From the blog with a photo of Bob Stewart and Bill Cullen...

    Another death in the family

The obituaries keep piling up. Bob Stewart, legendary producer of The Price is Right, Password, and Pyramid, has died at age 91.

Stewart usually stayed behind the camera, so his passing won't generate nearly as much attention as the recent death of Dick Clark. But to game show fans he was always a presence with his creative spark and practiced hand, which gave us some of the genre's very best formats.

Born Isidore Steinberg in Brooklyn, Stewart's big break came in 1956 when he joined Goodson-Todman. He developed The Price is Right, To Tell the Truth and Password for G-T before he left the organization in 1964. Mark Goodson famously promised to make Stewart a prince, but Stewart (just as famously) said he wanted to be a king. The story has always sounded like an urban legend to me, but it's apparently true.

As an independent producer, Stewart's greatest triumph was, of course, Pyramid. The all-lightning-round descendant of Password has gone through so many versions that it takes most of a Wikipedia article to track them all. The sad near-coincidence of the deaths of Dick Clark and Bob Stewart at least reminds us how superb the format was and is.

Stewart retired in the early 1990s, though his son Sande remained in the business as a fairly successful producer on his own. R.I.P.

This is one of the game show producers I've actually heard of. He was famous for many things, but The Price Is Right is probably what he is most known for.

    RIP

Been a long time. Mark Goodson once said the best thing that Stewart did for TPIR was the rule that the one who comes closest WITHOUT GOING OVER wins. That eliminated any controversy in determining who won. Of course, an exact bid trumped that rule, but still, that rule made the show work.

Bob Stewart did that? I really don't like that rule. GSN has that now on The Newlywed Game. I see it as this. Whoever has it closest should win, but there also is a possibility on The Newlywed Game where the final tied score is 45, someone says 40 and someone says 50, then they would have to go into another tie. So that's the only way it makes sense.

RIP Mr. Stewart...one of the very last of the great masterminds of the genre. He is up there with Goodson in my book, and created shows that really stood the test of time, even in numerous revivals. TTTT has aired in 6 different decades, Pyramid has had numerous incarnations, Password is still being used to teach school kids (including my own 14 year-old son's Language Arts class), and TPIR is going strong after nearly 50 years total. Who else can claim that kind of longevity and influence? Trends and gimmicks may come and go, but solid shows with good gameplay are forever. And he did it so well.

To Tell the Truth? Has is just aired or has it been revived at different times? Since it just aired, you can say that with most classics over 4-6 decades.

Actually, the only other shows to match that distinction are TPIR, LMAD, and the Newlywed Game. There were 5 incarnations of TTTT (1956-68, 1969-78, 1980-81, 1990-91, and 2000-02)...and the late, great Kitty Carlisle Hart is the only panelist who appeared on every version of the show.

Even though he wasn't as known as Dick Clark, I heard nothing about this on the news on T.V. or online. It even took GSN nearly a week to bring it up on Twitter. Weird.

The Price is Right had a black screen on Monday with "Rest In Peace, Bob Stewart. Creator of The Price is Right, 1921-2012".

I saw that on YouTube. That was on time with his death
