I honestly think Alex is probably 60/40 of retiring after Jeopardy's 30th season ends. The fact that he is thinking about it now makes me believe that. It's just like when Bob Barker decided to retire from "The Price Is Right after 35 years, I think Bob thought about it 2 years sooner.

He's well into his 70's. I think he's due for this.

CNN does an interview for The American Bible Challenge (a show that will strongly attract Republicans), and then Fox News does this. It's opposite world in TV Land, which means if its opposite world GSN will cut 50 Family Feud airings, show Card Sharks again, and renew a "clean" version of Lingo for 5 more seasons.

Here's the official news which I read about in this week's issue of The National Examiner about Alex Trebek's retirement from Jeopardy. Yes Alex has indeed confirmed that he will leave Jeopardy when his contract expires in 2014 but will still continue to host many Jeopardy video games and also focus on other projects as well. The final episode of Jeopardy with Alex Trebek will air in 2013 next fall with a special tribute to Alex with feedback from fellow contestants including Ken Jennings. No word on who will replace Alex yet but auditions have begun already,

I'm curious to see what those other projects will be, and I am surprised he will still keep up involvement with the Jeopardy! video games. If 2013-14 season is his last, then we still have two more seasons with him at least.

Let the speculation for 2016 begin and caught a bunch of chatter on Internets:

Combined without another announcement in a blog post...

    Newbies

Faux tweets noted that speed skater Apolo Ohno will host GSN's Minute To Win It remake, and that Today's Matt Lauer is in the running to replace Alex Trebek on Jeopardy when he retires.

Guess it's the season of the game show newbie. I don't want to sound snobbish here. After all, Bill Cullen was once just a radio announcer before somebody figured he could host a game show or two, or twenty-three. We all gotta start somewhere.

Both Lauer and Ohno are comfortable in front of the camera. And they would probably do okay in the unscripted, off-the-cuff talk which a game show host has to dispense. In a close precedent for Lauer, Meredith Vieira migrated from Today to Millionaire successfully enough. At least she kept the show going for eleven seasons.

Ohno is probably the bigger risk. Jocks tend to look notoriously ill-at-east when dragged out of their sport. But it's been a while since he was really a jock, anyway, and his IMDb page even lists a credit on Hollywood Squares. So I'm guessing he will, at a minimum, prove competent on Minute. We should see later this year.

Not only did Meredith keep Millionaire alive for eleven seasons, she did so after just about everyone in the fandom, myself included, thought Millionaire was naught but scorched earth after ABC gravely (but not, as it turns out, fatally) overexposed the series. While it's certainly true it was never again the phenomenon it was during 1999 and 2000, and there were regrettable diversions in the format (most notably the clock), the fact that it has now become the fourth longest-running syndicated game show of all time, after only the Big Two and the current Family Feud, has got to count for something.

Yes, everyone's got to start somewhere. In 1981, if you'd told me that a weatherman would take over the reins of Wheel of Fortune and help turn it into one of the most iconic game shows of all time, I would've laughed in your face. For that matter, the idea of Regis Philbin being the catalyst to return game shows to primetime TV and usher in the million-dollar era was equally laughable... until he actually did it. And hey -- despite what some naysayers still cling to, Drew Carey hasn't worked out that badly over a thousand shows into his Price is Right tenure, has he? You just never know.

I have nothing against the idea of someone coming out of another profession (i.e. Pat Sajak becoming a game show host), and I actually like the idea of a newsman or journalist taking a position for a show like Jeopardy! ... but that being said, I can't stand Matt Lauer. Just have a hard time warming up to him.

As far as Apolo Ohno ... well, it's not Guy Fieri hosting, so that already makes him a better emcee IMO.

Ryan Seacrest's name is going to pop up sometimes as a possibility. It does for every other high profile gig that comes open.

A post from the blog on my candidate to succeed Alex...

    Mark my words

The news about possible successors to Alex Trebek has the Jeopardy mavens at JBoard.tv buzzing.

A lot of the comments are goofy or dismissive of the whole idea of Alex stepping down. But there are some serious suggestions, too. We get deep into the thread, though, before anybody mentions my own favorite, Mark Walberg.

Mark, of course, proved how well he could host a quizzer on GSN's late, lamented Russian Roulette. He has the combination of entertainment chops and intellectual heft to host the "thinking person's" show. Anybody who watched Mark play Lingo on the April Fools special knows this guy is no dummy and can easily handle the Jeopardy chores. He's done well on Antiques Roadshow, which is pitched at pretty much the same demo as the answer-and-question-fest.

But we'll have to wait and see if Alex has any intention of stepping down any time soon, or not so soon.

And one more post on the subject from the blog...

    They're gonna replace Alex?

The buzz about possible replacements for Alex Trebek continues. So a top ten list was inevitable.

I've already mentioned my fave, Mark Walberg. But the linked story runs through a bunch of possibilities, some of which have been chattered about elsewhere. There are also more than a few offbeat ideas. My quick and dirty reaction to all ten candidates...

    10) Ben Bailey. I dearly loves me my Cash Cab, but Ben looked stiff on Who's Still Standing.

    9) Pat Sajak. The guy already has this other show you may have heard about.

    8) Mark McGrath. Don't send a boy to do an old-skewing show's job.

    7) Matt Lauer. Heard this before. So-so, bland, who cares?

    6) Tim Gunn. Who? Okay, I've heard of him, just barely. Too prissy.

    5) Don Lemon. Again, who? I've absolutely never heard of this guy. Looks like a run-of-the-mill newsreader.

    4) Rachel Maddow. Everybody to the right of Hillary Clinton would tune out.

    3) Anderson Cooper. Another oft-mentioned possibility. His syndie just got axed and he doesn't draw much of an audience on CNN, a network going down the tubes.

    2) Brian Williams. NBC is not going to let their news anchor do a game show. Any game show.

    1) Meredith Vieira. She just quit a game show, after all.

How can you have a top ten list of replacements without Jeff Probst? Srsly.

Pat Sajak may have been a joke suggestion, but I just rewatched that one April Fool's Day show he hosted and he didn't do badly at all. Of course, that was sixteen years ago...

My top 10 choices for the new host of 'Jeopardy!':

    1. Jeff Probst
    2. Ken Jennings
    3. Phil Keoghan (WAY out of left field choice, probably not going to work since he's racking up the frequent flyer miles on 'The Amazing Race')
    4. Marc Summers
    5. Scott Pelley (60 Minutes, CBS Evening News)
    6. Matt Lauer
    7. Anderson Cooper (I'd want to see him get away from Kathy Griffin)
    8. Todd Newton
    9. John O' Hurley
    10. Brian Williams (another one that probably won't work)
