    GSN ratings April 30-May 6

    From the blog...

TVNewser just posted their cable network ranker for April 30-May 5. GSN averaged 264K/227K viewers prime time/total day. Not so hot. The network ranked 44th in both categories among cable nets...

GSN averaged 279K/219K viewers prime time/total day for April, which is pretty much in line with the numbers Douglas Pucci has been posting on his blog. The network ranked 45th in prime time and 43rd in total day among cable networks.

For all of first quarter, 2012 GSN averaged 300K/228K viewers prime time/total day, with ranks of 46th and 45th among cable networks, respectively. You can find more GSN weekly and monthly averages in the cable network rankers under the "Generalities" category at TVNewser.

I still think back in 2009 and 2010 with hits like Deal or No Deal, The Newlywed Game and Baggage we saw much higher ratings. If GSN sorted Harvey into a 5 night one hour block than the 5 hour block on Wednesday that it has now, we would see better prime time ratings throughout April. That "279K" would have probably been a little over 300.

What happened to that over 700,000 mark that 5th Grader got during one of these past Sundays?

    Didn't translate over, I guess?

Oh, somewhat higher but not that much. GSN usually topped out in the 300Ks in prime time averages back then. And the channel usually finished in the 40s in rankings among all cable networks. Not far from where the ratings are now. No doubt DOND and Baggage helped the ratings get a little higher, but not astronomically so compared to current levels. It's not like GSN was averaging 500K or 600K in prime time back then.

That was the week of April 16-22, when GSN averaged 314K/246K viewers prime time/total day. The two weeks since then haven't been as good.

In general, ratings soften for most networks as the weather warms and people get outside more. GSN's numbers have generally come down from the first quarter but the network has still held roughly the same rank among cable nets.

A 263K average is mighty impressive for $25K Pyramid - that's about as well as you can reasonably expect anything to do at 10:30 AM. 220K for Super Password is also a good showing considering that it's the "death hour", and Password Plus is catching up to the numbers Card Sharks used to get in that slot. Putting the Passwords in those slots might not have been such a bad schedule move after all. Hopefully $25K will return as promised, and the week of Donnymid won't cause lasting damage to the ratings.

On the other hand, $25K Pyramid's ratings on Friday nights have gotten increasingly miserable. We'll see if Donny does any better, but I'm afraid it's definitely time for a change there. DoND didn't do so hot either, though its ratings seem to fluctuate from week to week. It might be time to ditch the blocks and create a new daily prime time schedule, with Harvey as an anchor.

Then again, Harvey's 11 PM ratings were surprisingly weak. I guess the tactic of same-day repeats isn't working so well.

25K Pyramid's best rating at 10:30am was 309K, but in the 7:30pm slot on Friday night only saw 97,000 views. at this point I say ditch the Monday-Friday block scheduling completely, since the only successful block is Wednesday. P+ and SP are proving good ratings, and the 10PM-noon block is still very alive even without Card Sharks

Saturday afternoon did not though. I looked at the ratings for The Newlywed Game and Family Feud (Harvey), and they both did poor. This is the second week with this schedule change, and Saturday afternoon did well last week. Maybe they had episodes with major rerun abuse for Sherri. The average from 3-5pm was about 150K or lower.

You also have to remember the Karn/O'Hurley block did very well from 6-11pm, and somehow latenights saw 200K+ ratings.

At least the prime time/total day averages I calculated from Douglas Pucci's numbers agree perfectly with the 264K/227K averages from TVNewser. Nice to know we're on the same page here.

Not much to say about the numbers except the obvious. Foxworthy and Harvey are the stars. Prime time is solid on Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday. Every other night smells, most of all Friday. So Donnymid's tryout on Friday night is no surprise.

I am THRILLED to see the ratings improvement for the Passwords! It took a few weeks for the audience to find them, but things are looking a lot more solid. They really need to dump Karn in the mornings...talk about stinking up the ratings. Bringing Card Sharks back (moving forward to the 79-80 season) and plugging it into that 9:30 slot would do wonders, since it's a proven winner. Match Game's rerun abuse is showing again...I think these episodes have been worn down, and it's time for them to move on to another season. And again, the block scheduling at night needs to go...it's just too much.

Match Game at 8:30 beat everything from noon to 2:00? Well you could have knocked me over with the weather.

Sure, Match Game is fun to see and I love it but I haven't recorded it again lately now that GSN is showing the same old thing(as in the same year). They need to get another year or better yet, PM again.

It's very weird. The top 20 is basically just all Harvey.

Now we have Karn and Donny in the morning. Not just post-1990 shows, but 21st century shows. It's too early for that, especially at 7:30am in the West.

That's when I think GSN's ratings are rigged. They must be cycling through episodes that haven't been seen in the 11am hour in a while. 200K showings of Match Game are unbelievable. It just proves that we like these 5 classics the most...

    1) Match Game/Match Game PM
    2) Card Sharks (Eubanks, Perry)
    3) $25,000 Pyramid
    4) Password
    5) Tattletales/The Newlywed Game (Eubanks)

But, does GSN also love Press Your Luck?
