    GSN ratings May 14-20

TVNewser published its cable network ranker, and GSN averaged 268K/224K viewers prime time/total day. Ranks were 42nd and 41st, respectively. Not so hot but not a complete disaster relative to other cable networks.

42nd and 41st place were close to the past few weeks, but it looks like GSN had another poor week of ratings, down from last weeks "good" numbers.

Will be interesting to see the full ratings if Douglas posts them, although I think it will be more of the same (Harvey Feud & 5th Grader at the top). At least they are mixing up the mornings, and that might have a positive effect on the ratings

Statistic about GSN: Regardless of what they program or what the actual schedule numbers are, GSN always ranks between 35th and 45th regardless of what they show. They were ~40th ten years ago with the older stuff, and they're almost the exact same now with the current programming.

He usually posts ratings Thursday afternoon around 4 or 5pm (Eastern) I've noticed recently, so we'll wait another day.

True. GSN never strays far from its appointed place in the cable pecking order. But the network has steadily increased its household availability over the last ten years, which has allowed it to keep up with the competition in total viewer numbers.

But thanks to its old demos - which have also been a constant for most of its shows - GSN is still not "fully distributed." If the network was available in the entire cable universe of about 100 million households, the total viewer numbers would look significantly better.

By the way, ten years ago GSN was running a lot of originals. In fact, the Boden originals were beginning their takeover of the network. Lingo debuted in August 2002, for instance. GSN was no longer just a rerun palace for old game show acquisitions.

That reminds me of my point of new originals are one of the few things that keep GSN alive. The Newlywed Game, Baggage, Catch 21 and Lingo have been GSN's big four originals in its history

Casey's right. GSN's good originals ("good" being the key word) have done very well for them. The good ones had enough traditional elements, yet had enough modern elements, that it placates both sides. So they'd be wise to follow that formula.

Unfortunately, I'd have to say there have been a lot more not-so-good originals than "good" ones. Hard to believe sometimes that Lingo & Catch 21 came from the same network that made Unstapled and Hidden Agenda.

Two shows that GSN should have kept in production. NG and Baggage we could say are good, long running originals.
