Red face What Went Wrong?: (pt 6 of 6) ("To Tell The Truth: 80's,90's,and 00's")

This is the last segment of "What Went Wrong?" Here is what we've talked about and commented so far:

    1) Card Sharks 01
    2) Tic Tac Dough/Joker's Wild (90's)
    3) Blackout
    4) The Pyramid (Davidson and Osmond versions)
    5) Match Game 90's (Shafer and Berger)
Feel free to comment on any of the past topics.

The last one is about of the most popular and storied game show franchises on television: "To Tell the Truth" The show's success was unmatched during its run in the 50's, 60's , and 70's. The last three incarnations did not do so well.

1980-1981 Robin Ward was the host
1990-1991 Gordon Elliott; Lynn Swann and Alex Trebek were the hosts.
2000-2002 John O'Hurley was the host.

The show kept the same game play throughout its history, I liked the "One on One" wrinkle in the 80's and 90's versions. Why didn't the last 3 incarnations live up to its predecessors? Thanks for commenting the past 6 weeks.

I may bring "What Went Wrong?" back in August with 4 new topics.

I believe GSN used to have a version of this show. It wasn't a HORRIBLE remake (or remakes). We had some good hosts.

GSN never remade this show. 80's and 00's were syndicated and 90's version was NBC

You're thinking of I've Got A Secret. GSN revived that in 2006.

Possibly, but To Tell the Truth didn't have horrible remakes

I enjoyed watching the 1990s version of To Tell The Truth. I liked their 1 on 1 with the audience round. I think the revolving door of hosts may have hurt the show.

I did not know that the 2000s version existed until GSN aired it. It was good too, I liked how they brought back the audience vote as well.

I mean To Tell the Truth, the versions in the 90's and 2000's weren't as bad as the remakes of Match Game (90-91, 98), Love Connection (98-99) and Card Sharks (2002). It was bearable to watch

TTTT in 2000 was probably the only revival at the time out of, it MG, FF and CS that Fremantle (at the time, Pearson) didn't foul up. I think Paula Poundstone could get annoying as a panelist -- she was best suited on shows like Hollywood Squares which allowed more room for lots of jokes and silliness IMO -- but other than that, I thought it wasn't a bad show.

I agree that the host situation is probably what messed up the 1990's version.

This. And depending on what you think of 2000s-style "content," some of the teams of challengers could get onto racy topics.

The 1980 and 1990-91 versions had nothing wrong with them IMO...Robin Ward didn't offend me as host, and the only thing wrong with TTTT9x was that they couldn't keep one. But hey, Mark Goodson got to host an episode!

I can see Card Sharks (2001) and Match Game (1998) failed, messed up revivals, but I can't see how Family Feud was. I know Louie Anderson wasn't a good host, and there wasn't a "300 point winning limit" like we've had since 2003. Otherwise, we had the classic format back on Family Feud.

If TTTT was more successful, then it would have lasted longer than two years.

I honestly think that these revivals failed mostly because panel shows had fallen out favor. The preceding Moore/Garagiola edition of TTTT was pretty much the last successful panel show not aimed at kids (the current success of Figure It Out does indicate some life in the genre). I thought all of these revivals were good shows, with the 1990-91 version being the best. Granted, the 1980 version suffered from an inconsistent panel, the 1990-91 version suffered from musical hosts, and Paula Poundstone weighed down the 2000 version a bit. But overall, they were solid entries in a genre that seemingly stopped getting respect after the mid-70's.

So many revivals failed anyway from the period of the mid 90's to the early 2000's. Love Connection, Card Sharks, Match Game, and even The Newlywed Game. To Tell the Truth was just another horrible revival, even with host John O'Hurley.

Just because something failed doesn't make it horrible.
