Deal or No Deal gone Thursday nights; more Catch 21

Well, most of our wishes have been granted. If you've been tired of the rerun abuse of Deal or No Deal, you got your wish.

GSN will be replacing the Thursday night block of Deal or No Deal with Catch 21.

Buzzerblog tweet:Schedule Change: Thursday's 7 to 11PM stack of Deal or No Deal will be replaced by a stack of Catch 21 starting next Thursday, July 5.

This now means Deal or No Deal will have 10 slots a week (weekdays 1pm, weekends 1 and 2pm, Sundays at midnight). Catch 21 will now climb to 25 airings a week.

Personally, this doesn't mean too much to me. I couldn't watch Deal or No Deal for 4 hours, or even one hour. I like syndicated DOND, as I've said on these forums before with its faster gameplay, and less of a gimmick. This is no huge surprise when it comes to poor primetime ratings, since it's usually one of the lowest rated blocks, but I didn't think GSN had the attitude to move any DOND slots, anywhere on the schedule.

Catch 21 has usually done poorly in primetime. Let's see how this goes. And...it's this, or another night of Feud. So I'll take Catch 21

This is a decent move, IMO. DOND was losing its novelty, and Catch 21 is a sufficient replacement for the Thursday night block, given its decent ratings at 4:00 PM as of late. Like you said, it's better than more Feud, and it would be even nicer to see some of the older seasons of Alfonso and Mikki's show pulled out of the vault.

All this being said, I still question the longevity of the block schedules in general, especially considering the big changes we may see in August with the new shows coming to the schedule...

There may be one night of The American Bible Challenge and Beat the Chefs. One show at 8pm, one show at 9pm. Then, the other four nights may stay the same.

Then, The Newlywed Game and The Pyramid should be nightly series, maybe airing at 7 and 7:30pm. Hopefully that's the case, with a good lead in after Harvey.

I'm sure the two hour long, weekly shows won't air Wednesdays.

While doing something else is nice and all, how does it help overall if you are just going to trade one rerun abused show for another? Without new episodes this will probably get old quick too.

Well here's what GSN could do about Catch 21. Keep airing the season 4 episodes in daytime, but air the season 3 episodes (2009-2010) in prime time, which haven't aired on GSN in almost a year.

Thank god. I've always said to myself GSN should replace something with Catch 21 and the Deal or No Deal block is perfect to me.

I think this is actually looking pretty good. Except one thing. Dump one of the Karn/O'Hurley Feud airing for something like Baggage perhaps. Maybe Mondays. Because, we don't need 2 days where there's like 7 hours of Feud in a row. 1 is enough, however.

Well, let me back up. Actually if I recall it was 3 days with 7 hour Feud blocks. But 2 would be okay. I would just cut down just a bit.

But I know everybody's answer to that.

"Feud does so good". Well, it won't with 3 days worth of blocks. 2 is enough. Because, people who want more Karn/O'Hurley would have to tune in on Saturdays.

I'm afraid Baggage would only do worse. Karn/O'Hurley did very well last week, and will probably continue to prove good numbers on Mondays with Harvey as a lead in at 6pm.

I'm surprised at the sudden onslaught of Catch 21. Is GSN considering bringing the show back with new episodes? The ratings have been good in the afternoon, but the show has had a rockier history in prime time. Then again, I suppose it might not do any worse than DoND at this point. This is probably just filler until the new originals debut anyhow.

Yes, they did good last week, but I'm afraid of the future of Family Feud on GSN.

And I'm hoping C21 may run all 4 seasons on Thursdays. It could happen.

I would like to see Season 1 of Catch 21, with the good theme music... which they unfortunately scrapped in later seasons of the show.

But I do agree with Pzimm. GSN should eventually remove the block scheduling, but more important than that, instead of replacing one show's airings with another show that's already on the schedule, they should acquire/re-acquire another game show entirely to test out the waters with. Either an old or a new game show works for me. Just add more game shows to the schedule to add variety to it.

17 Game Shows, of which 13-14 of them are on every day.
(Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Million Dollar Password and Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader being the 3 game shows only airing on the weekends)

Heck, I've been saying that GSN should get rid of block scheduling. I mean, different programming each night would be good. Maybe 4 episodes of shows couldn't hurt if you see what I'm saying. TV Land and The Hub does that and they must do fine, though Hub is a small network. (The Hub kind of recently just did it I think) I like TV Land like that. I might do something in the schedules thread similar to what TV Land does.
