I don't know...not just because of MG98, but because we live in a different society now. From 1973-82, and even '83-'84 and '90-'91, there were still taboos, so you could go for the double entendre answer or wouldn't go right for the throat as far as dirty answers. Humor was a lot more subtle back then. The '98 version proves that the panelists and contestants would go for the lowest common denominator too often. Plus everything after 1982 proved that things just wouldn't be the same without Gene, Brett, and Charles at the very least. (Not all the MG sequels were BAD...but not quite like the original CBS/syndies).

These ownership issues kind of reminds me of Archie vs. Betty and Veronica. Brandy and Monica vs. "the boy" in "The Boy is Mine".

Though I do admit, MG/HS Hour was a pretty damn good show.
How did they get a Pac-Man DVD out then? You'd think they would have to go through Namco.

I wish they'd get the Scooby series with the Puppy segments intact, and they own Ruby-Spears, they just don't want to admit Scrappy existed :-)

Pac-Man was made a cartoon with the permission from the company that produced the video game of the same name. Hanna-Barbera gave the characters a revamp to not appear exactly like the video game. The H-B character versions appears to have feet and arms, and wears a hat. The video game character version doesn't.

Richie Rich was made a cartoon in the early 80s also. Several Richie cartoons made it to VHS during the late 80s and sometime in the 1990s. I remember there being a "Priceless Toys" and "A Dog's Best Friend" VHS releases with 11-minute Zillion Dollar Adventure segments from the final two seasons of Richie Rich on ABC. The voice of Richie sounded more mature in the later seasons than he did in the first two seasons.

Volume I of The Richie Rich/Scooby-Doo Show was released on DVD in 2008, but didn't sell well. In fact, it was said to be the lowest-selling Scooby-Doo DVD on record. There is no word on if a Volume II DVD will be released (I have strong doubts). Not sure why it was a low-seller - was it because of the lack of Daphne, Fred, and Velma? Or was it because Scrappy may have been annoying?

As for The Little Rascals from the 80's, the chances of seeing it on TV or DVD again, all I can say is, you'll have a better chance of winning the lottery than seeing it on TV or DVD. Or a good chance of seeing it on YouTube someday, if any.

The only appearance of The Little Rascals cartoon on YouTube is the Pac Preview Party, from September 19, 1982 - it was hosted by Dick Clark, who would host the premiere of The New $25,000 Pyramid on CBS the next day. I hope more 80's Little Rascals cartoons appear on YouTube someday.

I am guessing Scrappy was annoying, right?

I always thought January 1983 was almost a new starting point for game shows. After a wild '70s, the early '80s saw a big downturn in games. During '82 it looked like they were losing favor with the networks and the audience. January '83 NBC debuted three on the same day and the rest of the decade was great!

And, lest we forget, on the same day that NBC debuted its three new game shows, TPIR rolled out Plinko for the very first time. Plus, the following September saw the premieres of PYL and the still-running syndicated Wheel. A banner year for game shows indeed.

Oh, yes, this was a remarkable year for game shows, existing and new.

Some folks have uploaded episodes of "The Match Game/ Hollywood Squares Hour." It's fascinating to watch with hindsight. When it was on, I liked it. Now, the problems with the show are pretty evident, especially after growing more familiar with the originals...

*There was no problems with Gene Rayburn as host of Match Game...it's as if he had taken a few weeks off. But Jon Bauman was pretty bad...and it hasn't aged well. And I doubt if he would have improved much if the show had lasted longer.

*On classic MG and HS part of the winning formula was the chemistry of the celebrities. Rarely was there much chemistry between the celebrities..most were from the NBC stable of stars.

*Mark Goodson tinkered with some of the rules of HS that really affected play. I often wondered how long Mr. Goodson expected the show to last.

Yeah, I hear ya. While I had no problem watching The Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour back in 1983-1984 (I was, in fact, more a fan of such show than Marshall's, Davidson's and Bergeron's versions), altered gameplay allowed for contestants to win by default, plus contestants won $25 per square they earned in addition to the flat payout in increments of $100 for winning a round. Other versions would forbid winning by default, and would pay out money for winning just the round. Not to mention there was no secret square in the 1983-1984 version. Such tweaking of gameplay must have turned off a lot of viewers because they were expecting to see gameplay similar or close to that of any previous version of Squares.

I think, since ratings were sinking, I can see why the show had decided to find a ploy for ratings, and that may be why they had a home viewer contest called the "Telephone Match". A viewer could be contacted at any time (a la The Phone Home Game on TPIR) and the home viewer would have a chance to win a lot of money. TPIR likely had The Phone Home Game in the 1980s as a way to attract viewership. But with the cancellation of game shows on NBC and ABC by the early 1990s, TPIR's ratings likely had risen as a result, even though The Phone Home Game had already been retired.

But since this show was the first version of Hollywood Squares I was exposed to (I was 11 during most of the run, and I never did get a chance to view the 1970s era episodes), I have to agree, and I may be in the minority to say this, but I personally think The MG/HS Hour had the best versions of Match Game and Hollywood Squares combined.

1983 was definitely a good year for game shows. 1983 was the year Press Your Luck started. Press Your Luck is and always will be my favorite game show. Before Bob Barker left The Price Is Right, that was my favorite game show. Since he left, I just can't watch it. With Barker gone from the show, Press Your Luck stepped right in. It was always number 2 on my favorite list before Barker left The Price Is Right.

Agree, 1983 was the best year for game shows

In my grade school years, one of the good things about staying home sick from school was being able to stay in bed all morning and watch Pyramid, PYL and TPIR. Those were the days.

And thanks to television history, I know for sure that I was sick in the 4th grade on June 11, 1984. That was the morning that part two of Michael Larson's PYL episode was broadcast. I was totally dumbfounded, and the other kids at school couldn't believe me when I told them. When the show went into reruns on USA, I watched every single day in order to catch those episodes again. I never did. Naturally, I now know why.

Even at a young age, I would also hope for a tropical showcase on TPIR as an easy excuse to see Dian in a bikini. But then, Hef would show me later that good things come to those who wait...
When the Giants come to town, it's Bye Bye Baby...
