But there are first-hand accounts of Allen's un-pleasantness off-camera. Which broke my heart when I first learned about it all, because Allen is a personal hero of mine, but I guess not all of them were going to be the greatest people.

The drinking thing though, I have to call BS on that. You can't just go around making claims like that without citing a source of some sort.

Yeah, I find the drinking accusation a little hard to believe, if only because it seems so out of left field.

Could you give some examples of the "unpleasantness" people have talked about? Was it people he worked with or fans or what? What did they say he did?

I would believe Allen has a drink every now and then, just like about everybody else has, but it doesn't mean he showed violence or aggression with it

Some staff people have said that he was difficult to work with behind the scenes. That's something you're not going to get on tape. The key words being "off camera" ....

Hello all! I'll just share a little about myself before I jump in with my question. I'm relatively young but I love classic game shows. My favorites are I've Got a Secret, What's My Line, Password (and Password Plus, or any other incarnation with Allen Ludden), and Match Game (70's version). My favorite hosts are Garry Moore (just adore him!), Gene Rayburn, and Allen Ludden. Anything you'd like to know about me, just ask.

Now onto the question...I've been reading through some old posts and I've picked up on the fact that maybe Allen Ludden wasn't the nicest guy in the world. This really surprises me because he seems like a really cordial guy on his shows and Betty White always speaks so affectionately about him. Of course, I know the way he appears on TV doesn't necessarily reflect what kind of person he actually was. But my other two faves, Garry Moore and Gene Rayburn, were apparently very well-liked by everybody (especially Garry, who I don't think had a bad word said about him by anybody ever). I was wondering what, if anything, Allen did that made him not so well-liked off camera.

I do believe hearing this, which is what I was trying to get at on this thread. There have been off-camera witnesses to Allen Ludden's behavior on Password and Password Plus, though Betty White doesn't admit to any fowl behavior from Allen.
