Back when block scheduling began in November, it was applauded on these boards for good variety. But at the start, the shows were bland and got repetitive. Now, we are coming up on nine months on the start of block scheduling, and here is what has happened....
November-December
Mondays and Fridays both seemed like a good idea immediately with the idea of airing five different shows over five hours. Mondays had modern, million-dollar shows which was named "Million Dollar Mondays" and then Fridays consisted of classic game shows from the 1970's and 80's, making up "Flashback Fridays". Both nights were revamped within six weeks with different shows.
January
As filler for the failure of "Million Dollar Mondays", GSN on five different Monday nights showed one GSN original each night to make up "Money Mondays". This lasted five weeks and was later turned into a Karn/O'Hurley Feud block.
February-March
Here is where block scheduling really started to downfall. We already had enough of the shows on Monday-Thursday elsewhere on the schedule. Then to make matters worse, Dancing with the Stars, GSN's new acquisition entered Friday nights not just from 7pm-Midnight like the other shows, but from 6pm-4am, replacing The $100,000 Pyramid.
Late March-June
With the downfall of Dancing with the Stars, GSN needed a primetime boost. Steve Harvey's Family Feud started airing Wednesday, March 28th and since April has dominated the top slots of the week, and is serving as a good lead in to primetime now. Block scheduling was also cut an hour from 7pm-Midnight, to 7pm-11pm, helping out block scheduling.
July-August
Three nights to go! Only three out of the five nights really struggled in ratings in the early Summer. In late June it was known that the block of Deal or No Deal would be filled with Catch 21, which has some success for the month of July, then August 2nd was replaced by GSN's #2 hit, 5th Grader. Tuesday night's Newlywed Game block was revamped with "Minute to Win It". The $25,000 Pyramid still remains Fridays, as the lowest block of the week, but at times higher rated then any night back in the Winter
My question is here, which do you prefer? The block scheduling we have now with plenty of variety, and four out of five nights with modern acquisitions, the fifth with a new lease on a classic, or a mix of Minute to Win It, Karn/O'Hurley Feud, Harvey Feud and The $25,000 Pyramid all five nights a week.
