My review of the premiere from the blog (with one mild spoiler)...
Bible study
Just watched the debut of American Bible Challenge, and I'll be upfront. The show wasn't nearly as bad as its detractors insist, and it wasn't nearly as good as its fans maintain.
What it was, was a decent quizzer that played every kind of question and answer game imaginable. Starting with three teams of three contestants apiece, the show winnowed the teams down to two for a final face-off that posed the toughest questions of the night.
Along the way we got some entertaining moments. The early questions were pretty easy, to lure in the not-so-clueful about the Bible. I even got a lot of them right, and I'm no scriptural genius. The difficulty level gradually rose as the show went through round after round of varied games. The final winners unfortunately had the most irritating contestant of the night on their team. But that wasn't enough to spoil the whole show.
Jeff Foxworthy did a pleasant and competent job as the host, and the show's gospel choir produced better music than the bands on Oh Sit. (Faint praise, I know. The choir really did sing well.) Sometimes the humor got cringe-worthy - "word of the Lord or Lord of the Rings?" - but it was no worse than some of Jeopardy's aching puns. I'll probably stick around for the rest of the nine-episode tournament.
One of these days I'll take in GSN's Beat the Chefs and post a review. I'm no cooking fan, but I'll try to be as evenhanded as possible.
I saw The American Bible Challenge today and I think GSN will hit a big home run out of the ballpark with The American Bible Challenge and Jeff Foxworthy hosting it will mean a whole new direction for his career and we might see him doing gospel cds and more family oriented shows to expand his career. As for the gameplay I think it's pretty cool that the teams are winning money for their charity and we may see more shows like this in the near future from other networks. The last part The Revolution Round is pretty cool and seems pretty easy to win and will make the show a huge success for GSN in the future. All and all GSN has done an awesome job with The American Bible Challenge and it has been worth the wait,
Vinnie,
P.S. During today's show Jeff mentioned that the teams that do well will go on to American Bible Challenge's Tournament Of Champions and I would like to know how it works. Is this gonna be held at the end of each season?
I'm not sure where to start, but from both shows that premiered last night they were both what I expect. From the start of American Bible Challenge, the beginning made the show look interesting, but it was also a preview of what I've already seen, but hopefully fresh to others. Jeff seemed like a good host, telling some witty jokes here and there, mainly in relation to the Bible. I simply didn't get the Larry the Cable Guy one. Next, I didn't get why GSN edited everytime something happened that was barely funny to show the audience laughing. There was just too much of the audience seen which wasn't necessary.
Now on to the actual gameplay. I thought most of it was fair narrowing three contestants to two, then two contestants to one throughout the course of the game. I just felt the point set up was a little lopsided. It went '10' to '25' for the first rounds with all three members of the team playing, then it went from '50' in the doubles round. I felt like it should have been 10 points to 20 to 30 per correct answer. Then, for the round where only one person of the team had to choose three correct answers out of six, that could have been 50 for each correct answer.
Unlike one reviewer, I do not feel like this show dug too far into the Bible. I knew most of the knowledge because it just seems like common sense, and the question I didn't know still didn't seem mind-boggling and extremely difficult.
For the bonus round, it was a pretty great format going one player by one for each team, so one player on the team wouldn't just do all the work. Though, I was a little stunned that the first team (Minnie's Pantry) couldn't get more correct answers than four in the 60 seconds.
Finally, for cash rewards $20,000 per episode is a great amount for the winning team, and a chance to advance to the tournament. For the second place team, $5,000 was very generous whereas on other originals, second place gets nothing. I thought the second place winnings should be based on how many answers they get in the 60 seconds, at $1,000 per correct answer. Therefore, Minnie's Food Pantry would have walked away with $4,000.
I give American Bible Challenge 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. I think it will last on GSN past the nine episodes, and into a second season.
There will be a total of nine episode. The last three that air (in October) will be the tournament. Since there are six episodes, six teams will move on to the tournament and it will be spread across three weeks.Originally Posted by PrincessVinnie
I'll bring what I said in one thread, to here.
I just watched the encore of The American Bible Challenge, and I have to say, that is the best GSN original I've seen in awhile. It's interesting, and I love the set. So, I'm voting for Bible. I am not going to watch Beat The Chefs. If I wanted to watch cooking, I would go to the Food Network. That's what Food Network is there for.
For Bible, I have to say in the finals though, the ladies were still on stage when the guys were going to try to beat 4 (which they couldn't). The ladies at that time should have went backstage. That's the only con I have, otherwise, best show on GSN in awhile.
A couple questions about the show...
1) Did the third place team win any money?
2) The first place team every week wins $20,000 AND also a chance at an additional $100,000 in the tournament?
With the exception of the music, I love the show.
Speaking of...the theme song was great. I liked the intro and how Foxworthy in the theme song was shown as the host.Originally Posted by KLHall1960

I enjoyed watching The American Bible Challenge last night. I look forward to watching the show next week.
The third place team got $2,500 for their cause. I thought this show was done in an entertaining way without being "preachy" which I think is a good thing. Most questions are multiple choice, so viewers can play along, and you can usually eliminate an answer or two with common sense. God obviously didn't "pinky swear" never to flood the earth again.
Overal rating - 7 (out of 10), if you can deal with the subject matter.
The multiple choice part I really like the best, especially when they have to chose 3 out of 6 correct answers. Very coolOriginally Posted by BillCullen1
I watched American Bible Challenge last night, and I personally thought it was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed the show. I also think Jeff Foxworthy was an excellent choice to host it. This has been so refreshing, and I believe it will do well. And, they don't have women flaunting their bodies, there isn't any cursing. They don't have people wanting to find someone to date, nor do they have a person deciding which person they want to be with. Nor, answering questions and talking about their sex life. Having the singers (choir) is great. Also, kids can watch the show. How wonderful is that.
Please keep posts about the show, and do not turn this thread into a "chat" thread. Thank you!
