Hard to fathom that contract, even today with the NHL being on the low end of sports salaries among Major sports. Especially when the soap opera with the Rangers/Flyers and ultimately Larry Bertuzzi commenced.
1990-93 was the time when salaries started to sky rocket in sports. That collusion case on Morris allowed people like Bonds to enjoy cash...recall he made something like 5/28 with Giants for 93. Right after he told Pirates he would sign for 5/27, they agreed. He then announced the Giants next morning.....great guy that Bonds.
Hockey never quite had the money for salaries, though Bobby Hull did sign that Million dollar deal with the Jets in 72. Bobby Orr got a million from the Hawks, but he never cashed all the checks because he was hurt. Imagine that today....Orr was a truly special player and person.

BTW, if people are Flyer, Bruin and Leaf fans...NHL Network will be showing histories of those teams with 90 minute specials( filmed previously) over next few weeks. Set your DVR....

The Flyers signed Nashville's restricted free agent Shea Weber to a 14-year, $110-million offer sheet, giving the Predators seven days to match it or accept four first-round draft picks. But, since the Flyers are involved, one of the following events will take place:

    1. Gary Butthead gives Nashville an interest-free, 14-year loan to keep Weber there (or just gives Nashville money under the table).
    2. The Flyers get Weber, and when the season starts (if it does), the league promptly suspends him 25 games for his hit on Henrik Zetterberg in the playoffs.
    3. The Flyers get Weber, whereby the league lowers the salary cap to about $25 million and limits all contracts signed after July 15th, 2012, to 5 years.

I work, therefore... I miss (s-bomb) dropping like this:

Rick Nash is a New York Ranger. Finally.

In a deal that has been brewing since February, the Columbus Blue Jackets dealt their captain to the Rangers on Monday along with defenseman Steven Delisle and a conditional third-round selection in the 2013 Entry Draft in exchange for forwards Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov, defenseman Tim Erixon and the Rangers' first-round selection in the 2013 Draft.

If the Rangers advance to the 2013 Stanley Cup Final, Columbus will retain its third-round pick.

For this 900th post of mine, I shall elucidate:

Mike Richards is the game show host, and Jeff Carter is a pro bowler: http://www.pba.com/Bowlers/Bowler/6673

As Gene Hart used to say, "Good night, good hockey."

Two common names. When I looked up Mike Richards for the first time I remember all I could find were hockey results.

Happy 25th birthday to Sid BTW....now he can legally rent a car and run over as many Flyer fans as possible and not get the blood/gore all over his $180,000 SL-Class Mercedes. (The obvious answer is not the right one on how I know what kind of car he drives. Let's just say it's good to have connections to the right people. )

I hear Malkin popped the question to Crosby yesterday. Gary Butthead will give the bride away -- for two first-round picks.
