I miss the regular B&W blocks.

Has GSN ever aired Truth or Consequences? Do the episodes even exist?

Wikipedia (usual caveats) says that GSN has never broadcast Truth or Consequences. I couldn't find any information about episode status for the old Barker version.

I uploaded a little treat on my YT page yesterday, and thought I would share with my fellow B&W fans...the link is in my sig. I'm currently putting together a few more videos to add, so "stay tuned," as they say.

Last night I was watching a tape. On the WML episode which aired in 1966, Larry Blyden was on the panel, and Steve Allen was a contestant. He sold Motorcycles. One of my favorites.

I love that one too - that was sneaky of G-T and Fates to do that , but it was awfully good!

I think this makes Steve Allen as the only person to be a Mystery Guest and a regular contestant. (where the panel is unblindfolded) Correct me if I'm wrong
    viacom sucks

I can't say for sure, because of the fact that 100+ of the 867 episodes are lost, though he's the only one who comes to mind for me, at the moment. But he's certainly the only one who has been a regular panelist, a guest panelist, a contestant, and a MG...a very rare distinction, since it was all done during the original network run. He was also a guest panelist on the syndicated run. The only thing Steve didn't do in front of the camera on WML is moderate. The only one who even came close to him on all of that was Bennett (sub-hosted on CBS, regular panelist for 16 years, MG on syndie, and guest panelist on syndie).

Speaking of Steve Allen, I just noticed this recent IGAS upload at YouTube. The final-season 11/7/66 clip was posted in remembrance of a certain Robert O. Fletcher. You'll see Mr. Fletcher in a memorable appearance at the end of the segment, as Steve Allen engages in a bit of very politically incorrect business.

The segment also features an amazing solve by Henry Morgan (looking rather odd in his retro eyewear). Reminds me of Caitlin Burke's one-letter solve on Wheel of Fortune. And there's some of the strangest "music" you'll ever hear. Steve channels Mr. Spock when he pronounces it music, but not "as we know it."

The segment starts with an ironic announcement that the show is broadcast in color. Sorry, the clip is just a B&W kine. And guess who shows up at the top of the show: Walter Cronkite. Remember him? The clip concludes with the beginning of an unintentionally hilarious ad about a mother-in-law's bad breath.

All in all, a very funny bit of IGAS history.

I wish the Cronkite segment was up too - that's a good one.

Henry and Bess cutting a rug to that "music" is priceless....and Steverino really sends the segment out with a bang, doesn't he?

    Thanks for the link!

The IGAS episode guide says the panel is "unknown" for this ep. Well, now we know it: the four regulars.

    SNL Secret Word

This is probably in some other thread, but I haven't found it, so I'll post it here. This past Saturday, 1/22/10, Gywneth Paltro portrayed Arlene Francis on the recurring Saturday Night Live skit "Secret Word". It was very amusing. Of course they did not call her "Arlene Francis", but the costume and wig were unmistakable.

In case you missed it, watch and enjoy:

A little off-topic, but it does relate to a B&W show...from the blog:

Jack LaLanne, who completed 761,239,833 push-ups in his life, has died at the ripe old age of 96. I still remember his exercise shows from the 1950s, when my childhood self would do jumping jacks in front of his flickering image on a black-and-white teevee. Speaking of the fifties, Jack once appeared on Groucho's ancient You Bet Your Life, as duly recorded on YouTube. He even said the secret word.

A few total viewer numbers for the B&W shows last month, courtesy of Douglas at Mediaweek...

    12/24
    3:00a What's My Line 169
    3:30a I've Got a Secret 92

    12/23
    3:00a What's My Line 176
    3:30a I've Got a Secret 143

    12/22
    3:00a What's My Line 201
    3:30a I've Got a Secret 159

Total average for the three hours was 157K. Not bad at all. Christmas Eve was obviously low, though GSN did very well in the 6:00 PM-10:30 PM window for the day. I believe Alex Davis also posted some B&W numbers for 12/17, which were a little higher than these.

UPDATE: Found Alex's numbers for 12/17: WML 228 and IGAS 164. That means a 167K average for the four days. Okay, certainly competitive with color shows in the hour.

Thanks for posting these numbers. I am a little surprised that they are not higher, like consistently in the 200s-- only b/c that's what CS and Pyramid have been able to pull. Also, with all the buzz about this on here, I guess I was cocooned into thinking they'd be a little higher.

However, considering the time they were on and the fact that there was no promotion at all, these aren't bad-- especially if the numbers are competitive with other programs at that time. After all, we are talking about shows that are black and white, about half-century or more old, and airing on a small, specialized niche network for only a temporary time. So, taking all into consideration, I am pretty happy.

A note of observation: WML? seemed to do a bit better than IGaS...
