Maybe, depending on the company the network leases shows from, a lease of a Sony-owned show may be based on a certain number of airings, whereas a lease of a Fremantle-owned show may be based on time (however many years or months). That may explain why they picked up the 2001-2002 season of Jeopardy! in April 2005, and didn't see a fresh batch of episodes until July 2008. And Jeopardy!, as we all know, is a Sony-owned show.
I also find that the variety of fresh episodes of classic game shows is running lower as of lately. If I recall, after the current batch of PYL episodes will have aired after the middle of June, all that will be left of PYL will be the final 198 episodes of the run. And for $25,000 Pyramid, there are more episodes GSN could lease. There are so few remaining from 1987 (a vast majority of July and at least part of August 1987 was devoted to reruns because of Oliver North-related coverage). If I remember correctly, there is the remainder of April, all of May and June, part of July and part of August, all of September to October, and part of November of 1987 $25,000 Pyramid episodes that have yet to air. Maybe the number of classic episodes running low is probably why we're seeing smaller episode leases as of lately.
